incorporate such unexpected elements as

grass, soil, and even her own clothing. Though

she’s based in New York, Gochman’s

work—which comprises sculpture,

photography, and projected imagery—has

Three artists I admire are Artemisia Gentileschi, Mierle Laderman Ukeles, and Mary Ellen Carroll. Gentileschi was a baroque painter credited with many masterpieces. She persevered and excelled within an oppressive environment. Ukeles blurs the boundaries between personal life and art. Through performing actions that are devalued, such as cleaning, Ukeles’s work challenges us to question what we value. Carroll asks us to reconsider what we see as art.
